VALE golfer Warwick Holland overcame a major obstacle as he helped the club's men's scratch team to an important victory.
Warwick broke his new driver in a last-16 match against Bransford in the Droitwich Shield Scratch Foursomes - but still came up trumps.
Having elected to play even holes, which meant he had to tee off at all six par-fives, he broke the driver on his third (not a par five) but continued to play the long holes with his two iron and still managed to hit every fairway.
Teammates were convinced this was better than he would have achieved with his driver!
The team beat Bransford 3-0.
Scores: Rob Coe & Ian Crocker won 2&1, Warwick Holland & Fred Fawkes won 2&1, Steve Watts & Sam Watts won 2 holes.
The quarter-final draw saw them with a home match against a strong Dudley side.
After the regulation 18 holes for each of the three foursome matches, the score was a draw 1 1/2 points to each team. So Steve and Sam Watts, having halved their match, went on to play sudden death. A birdie three at the first extra hole saw the home team win an exciting match.
Scores: Warwick Holland & Gary Downie won 1 up, Rob Coe & Fred Fawkes lost by 1 hole, Steve Watts & Sam Watts won at the first extra hole.

THE men's February medal was held in surprisingly mild conditions on a course in excellent condition for the time of year.
Former club Captain Dave Vincent rolled back the years and produced an excellent performance to win with a net 67 on countback from John Jones. Both Dave and John were suitably rewarded with two-shot drops in their respective handicaps.
Another ex-club captain, Geoff Insall, took the honours for best gross on the day with a round of 78.
Results: 1 D.Vincent (17)67, 2 J.Jones (20) 67, 3 M.Palmer (16) 69.
