Villagers close to victory

THERE was a real cliffhanger of a finish at Dumbleton on Monday when the home side missed out by two runs in pursuit of 291 for victory against Ray Julien's XI.

The ex-first-class umpire's side notched up a daunting 290-6 with former Worcestershire batsman Matt Church top scoring with 67.

Openers Laurie Potter (48) and Rob Bailey (48) gave the visitors a solid start that Church capitalised on despite a fine spell of 3-25 from Pete Boorman.

In addition to the former Kent and Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire opening batsmen, Julien's side also contained ex-England stars Tim Munton, Gladstone Small and Bobby Parks and Jason Ratcliffe, now playing for Stratford in the Birmingham League but that didn't deter the hosts who replied strongly in a memorable day's final session.

Nigel Stanton (71) and Nick Holland (70) led the way, while Boorman weighed in with 36. It was Tom Green who almost conjured up a win with 38 not out but Dumbleton's final pair just couldn't manage the boundary needed off the final ball to win.
