Festival qualifying news

LAST Wednesday saw a qualifier for the Evesham Festival contested on the Town Waters where 24 anglers battled it out for a much sought after ticket to fish the Bank Holiday weekend's Wychavon Championships.

Despite the river being up almost a foot and Coloured, it fished well and winner Rich Reynolds of Daiwa Gordon League brought to the scales 19lbs 12ozs that consisted of four bream one tench and some eels off peg 15.

Other finishers: 2 Trevor Chalk (Sensal Portway) 17.2; 3 Steve Ashmore (Starlets) 11.9; 4 Steve Toone 11.3.

A second qualifier took place on Evesham Town and Hampton Ferry on Saturday when 40 anglers were in action.

Local competitor Brian Bennett, fishing off peg 36 on the Town Water, came first with 14lbs 2ozs using a feeder to catch some chub.

In second place was 2003 Fishomania champion Matt Hall from Nottingham with 13lbs 5ozs off peg 58 on the Town.

Alcester's George Avery was third with 11lbs 1oz with another local Tony Bench fourth (9.12).

The penultimate Shakespeare Qual-ifier was fished last Sunday on the Evesham Town and Hampton Ferry Waters where 47 anglers fought for the coveted invitations to the annual extravaganza.

On his final attempt, it was Bench who succeeded by taking two barbel from peg 37 on Evesham Town Waters to the scales and weighed in 18 pounds.

One weighed 10lbs 12ozs and the other 7lbs 4oz. Both were beautiful specimens caught with pellet on a feeder rig.

In second spot was a visitor from Cock and Magpie AC in Kidderminster, while Shakespeare Angler Steve Williams was third (8.13).

The final qualifier takes place on Saturday with the draw at Raphaels at 9-30am with fishing between 11am and 4pm. Tickets available from Diana on 01386 442458.
