Give us your backing, says saved club's manager

WHERE are the people who objected so strongly when the Dowty Sports and Social Club was threatened with closure? That is what manger Janet Brown wants to know.

She says planning permission was granted for conversion of the clubhouse next to the railway station at Ashchurch into offices in July. She had recently taken over as manager, and decided instead to keep it open.

However, despite offering activities such as pool, skittles and darts, discos and barbecues, few new members have joined.

She wants to emphasise that although the club was originally set up to cater for Dowty employees, membership is now open to anyone, and gives access to all the facilities at the group's two other clubs, at Arle Court in Cheltenham and at Staverton.

She is hoping that an entertainment evening, featuring soul singer Ricardo and professional DJs on September 18, will attract more people.

"We have given you a venue, now let's see you support it," she said.
