Go-ahead for 250 allotment homes

PLANS to build 250 houses on allotments off Bredon Road have been given the go-ahead by Tewkesbury Borough Council.

The development by Pettifer Estates includes 75 extra care units for the frail elderly, provided by Hanover Housing, and a church/community centre.

There will also be a number of play areas, including two equipped for toddlers and one designed for teenagers, incorporating skateboard equipment and a meeting shelter.

The developer has provided a new site further up the Bredon Road for allotment holders.

They will have a car park, sheds and standpipes for water, and most say they are happy to move.

A road giving access to Tewkesbury Cruising and Sailing Club, which crosses the development, will be maintained.

The developer is also being asked to contribute to improving facilities at Mitton Manor Play Group and traffic lights at the junction of Mitton Way and Bredon Road.

Local councillor Mike Sztymiak raised concerns that this could influence drivers from the existing estate to use Digby Drive and Carrant Road instead.

Senior planning officer Chris Shaw said that Mitton did not generate a great deal of traffic, but that traffic calming measures could be introduced if necessary.

Councillors agreed to the scheme in principle, with the detail being delegated to planning officers.

Committee members particularly welcomed the facilities for the frail elderly, which they said were much needed.
