LONG-AWAITED work on Shipston's new £2 million leisure centre is due to get under way in the next few weeks after Stratford district councillors gave planning permission for the project last week.
Members of Stratford District Council's east area planning committee gave unanimous support for the development, which will include a 25-metre, five-lane swimming pool and a fitness suite.
Despite delays in signing contracts over the dual use of the pool, which is being built on Warwickshire County Council-owned land next to Shipston High School, the centre is still on schedule to be open next summer.
Local district councillor Trevor Russel said: "It's excellent news, and removes the last major hurdle to going ahead with the most important project for the Stour area for many years.
"The delay in starting has been extremely frustrating, although not the district council's fault. But the builders and everyone else are geared up to go, and it will be full speed ahead from now on."
