THE story of black South African music from tribal times to the present day can be savoured at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre.
Umoja, which means The Spirit of Togetherness, is a celebration of dynamic talent, thrilling energy, great voices, sensual dancing and the best of South African popular music.
The company was created 10 years ago and has given young people the chance to move on from the streets of Soweto and their personal problems and turn around their lives.
Several of the 40-strong cast members were involved in drugs, crime and prostitution when they auditioned for Umoja. One had been living under the archway of a bridge for years and had no real family or home.
As a result of being involved with the company and its work, many of the cast members have found inspiration to move on and continue the tradition of spreading goodwill and helping other young people out of their poverty stricken lifestyle.
The vibrant Umoja performance takes place in Birmingham from August 25 to 29. Evening performances start at 7.30pm and matinees are at 2.30pm on Friday and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets range from £15 to £20 and are available through Ticketmaster on 0870 607 7535.
