Windfall may benefit elderly

TAX increases on second homes worth £200,000 will be ploughed into projects to help elderly people in the Cotswolds.

The move, due to be ratified by Gloucestershire County Council next month, follows Cotswold District Council's decision to raise the levy on second homes from 50 to 90 per cent of the full council tax rate.

Councillor Edward Horsfall, who has responsibility for health and housing, said: "Services and support for the Cotswold district's growing elderly population has been identified as one of the top five priorities for the council."

The district council's cabinet has suggested a number of projects that could be supported by the windfall.
