Church plan is held back

RESIDENTS of Longborough will have to wait at least another month before they find out if a controversial plan to build a Plymouth Brethren Church meeting hall in the village will go ahead.

Cotswold District Council planning committee members agreed at their meeting last week to defer consideration of the proposal to build on land at Eastgate House in Moreton Road until September 22.

Senior planning officer Geraldine LeCointe said it was at the request of the applicants.

As reported in the Journal last month, the plan has prompted a hostile reaction from some local people, who are concerned that 230 church members may be using the hall at any one time, with several meetings a week.

The Brethren meet in Well Lane, Stow, but agent Morgan Cole said their hall was no longer big enough to accommodate special meetings, which attract visitors from as far away as Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham, Swindon and Coventry.
