Hit back to win after a slow start

THE Broadway triple of Mick Aubrey, Colin Cooper and Andrew Walters won the Reg Russell Triples on Sunday when they overcame Evesham's Warren Higson, Gary Hunt and Nigel Gould 27-11 at Gilt Edge BC in Kidderminster.

Evesham raced into an early 7-1 lead but the Broadway trio then found their line and length and recovered to take command.

They limited Evesham to only four more shots and a seven on the 15th end sealed victory and the trophy.

Cooper and Walters have already won the County Triples competition this year and, to round off a highly successful season, they returned to Broadway in the afternoon to claim further titles at the club's Finals Day.

Walters (17) played in the Men's Championship and proved too strong for Phil Taylor winning by 21-12.

Cooper, meanwhile, teamed up with Joan Clarke in the Pairs and overcame Ron Bryant and David Cresswell 29-17. He then played his third game of the day in the Two-Wood final when he accounted for Taylor 14-9.

In other finals, Sue Davies took shot on the last end to defeat Joan Parfitt 14-13 in the Ladies Two-Wood Singles. The winner then went on to beat Betty Mansion in the Handicap competition 21-11.

Viv Hall narrowly lost the Club Open to Brian Gould but then returned in the afternoon to win the Ladies Open when defeating Elaine Crosbie 21-14.

Jeff Dennis made a spirited fightback in the Men's Handicap final. Trailing 18-9, he fought back only to lose 21-19 when he trailed the jack to John Oliver's wood and not his own.

l ALAN Halliwell was the solitary winning skip when Bidford crashed to a heavy defeat at Rugby last Saturday.

The visitors current run of good form was brought to an abrupt end as the hosts won on five rinks to claim victory by 57 shots.
