Holders on a high but Upton down and out

FIRST AND second round matches in the Tewkesbury Sports Knockout Cup took place last weekend when three-time winners Upton Snodsbury fell at the first hurdle.

Handing out the defeat were fellow Division One outfit Mickleton Rangers for whom Matthew Tye struck twice with Tony McLean's reply in vain.

Holders Red Horse defeated Defford and Besford with Stride and Staley both netting hat-tricks, while beaten finalists for the past two seasons, the Bear, comfortably progressed with a 5-0 defeat of Lenches Lions thanks to goals from Greenwood (2), Haines (2) and Slade.

Hampton WMC were the day's top scorers with a dozen against Pebworth with Cook (5) and Redding (4) leading the way.

There were 11 goals at Harvington where Golden Cross and Crowle both played their part in a thrilling contest that was only decided in the second period of extra-time.

A game of three penalties saw four goals in the opening 12 minutes and Cross lead 3-2 at half-time. The visitors hit back to take the tie to overtime when they led 5-4 only for James Brown to take his tally to fur with a couple of late strikes.

A Lewis treble helped Evesham WMC overcome Shipston, while doubles from Robbie Hands and Gary Hawkins helped Willersey ease past Oddfellows Arms.

Two goals from Frazer gave Queens the honours in a tight game at Eckington, while a Neale treble helped Moreton Town defeat higher graded Broadway.

A hat-trick from Gary Hughes was the highlight in Peopleton's seven-goal win at Bengeworth Sports, while Steve Hedderman found the net as Norgren won at Gate Inn.

Reigning champions Moreton Wanderers made it three wins out of three in the top flight with an impressive win at Offenham. Youngster Mills scored four for the winners while Griffiths will feel aggrieved after hitting a hat-trick for Rovers.

Bretforton Old Boys maintained their winning start in the third division when scoring six at Wickhamford where Darryl Mitchell found the net four times.
