IN the absence of president Christine Powell members were welcomed by vice-president Mollie Groom. Several forthcoming events were discussed including a visit to the garden at Highgrove and a BBC Gardeners Question Time programme which will be recorded in October. Mrs Groom read a letter from the president thanking members for the shrub she had received to mark her Ruby Wedding. Birthday buttonholes this month were presented to Doreen Cope, Angela Lewis and Margaret Whatcott.
The speaker for the evening was Brian Bailey on Source to Sea. He described a walk he and his wife had enjoyed from the source of the Severn 3,200ft up in the Welsh mountains. The whole journey was 200 miles. The river was very busy in the past with commercial traffic but now is only used for pleasure and holiday craft. It was a fascinating journey with slides showing the river flowing through Shrewsbury, Ironbridge, Bridgnorth, Stourport and Gloucester, most of these towns supplying work to the boatmen on the river.
The next meeting will be an open meeting in the Village Hall on Tuesday, October 5 to which all are invited when the speaker will be Tony Caldwell on Everest.
