Police puzzled by axed telegraph pole

POLICE are mystified by the deliberate felling of a telegraph pole in a Cotswold village, which caused a collision.

The fallen pole was reported to police at 10am on Tuesday. Officers said it showed signs of being sawn or cut with an axe and was partially blocking Tally Ho Lane just outside Guiting Power.

Shortly after the initial report police were contacted by a woman from Laverton who said she had collided with the pole in her Land Rover Freelander. She told police that although her car was damaged she had not been injured in the collision. The pole was repaired by BT engineers.

Police spokesman Matt Ford said: "There is little clue as to why anyone would do this as the pole was left where it fell. It caused damage to the phone system and could have caused serious injury to passing motorists."
