GENEROUS Moreton people helped the town's Royal British Legion branch raise a record amount for the Poppy Appeal.
Organiser, branch chairman Frank Coxhill, said it was possible that current wars and conflicts had focused people's minds on the needs of those who serve and their families.
He said that since last November £6,721.21 had been collected in the town but money was still coming in. "Last year we raised £4,813.42, which is an increase of at least 35 per cent.
"This is down to a lot of hard work from all of our volunteers and the generosity of everyone who gave - I noticed that some of the donations we had were double what they had previously been.
"I also think that the Iraq situation has brought it home to people that money is still needed for our troops and their families."
He added that new volunteers were needed in time for the next Poppy Appeal in November.
"We always need more help, particularly as none of our volunteers are getting any younger.
"We will also have the new estates in town to get round next year - but this should help us collect even more."
Although it is centred on Remembrance Day, the Poppy Appeal continues throughout the year. Mr Coxhill said that any shops or businesses that wanted to display a collection box should get in touch with him. He also said that anyone who wanted to get involved as a volunteer could call him on 01386 700215 for details.
