Town bids to have voice on airwaves

VOLUNTEERS and ideas are needed to help give a Cotswold town a voice on the airwaves.

Winchcombe has moved a step closer to setting up a community radio station following a series of meetings in the town this month.

It is hoped that Radio Winchcombe can start broadcasting for a trial period in April.

Councillor Ron Allen, who represents the town on Tewkesbury Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council, said the idea was a bid to improve community involvement.

"It holds great promise as a way to let people have their say and help community cohesion."

So far a steering group has been set up and an outline plan has been created.

The station would broadcast a 50/50 mix of music and talk over a radius of about ten miles.

It is thought the station would be broadcast from the Youth Centre which will be equipped with a studio and an FM aerial on the roof.

Organisers are now calling on people to come forward with ideas for the station which can be given via programme proposal forms at the town's library.

Volunteers of all ages, who do not need any experience, are also being urged to get in touch.
