New teams take league place

AT LAST week's annual general meeting, the Prudden Road Surfacing League will comprise of five divisions this year following the surprise last minute entry of Ullenhall.

The newcomers join Ardencote Manor, Claverdon C, Harbury, Snitterfield and Whitnash in Division Four of the new league constitution that now covers Mid and South Warwickshire clubs as well as several in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

Secretary Corin reported that the league had not only retained the 31 teams from last year but, with the six new teams, now stood at 37 in total.

All six new teams were accepted into the league for 2005, ensuring three divisions of eight, one of seven and the new division of six teams.

The league also runs a Junior section, a one-day tournament and an Inter-League Charity Cup Final.

The meeting at the Royal British Legion Club in Bidford had a heartening attendance of 30 members representing the 37 teams from 23 clubs.

The meeting heard of competitive battles in this summer league, not only in all four divisions in 2004, but once again in an exciting end of season Floo-dlit Pairs Tournament.

League chairman Alan Robson was presented with a gift on his retirement and Warwickshire LTA secretary Tony King was elected as new chairman and all officials were unanimously re-elected.

The secretary offered his thanks to the main sponsors Prudden Road Surfacing of Redditch and also to Asphalt Express Redditch, who donated £50 cheques to each of the division's winners - the money to be used to develop junior tennis.

He also thanked once more the Floodlit Pairs Tournament sponsor and league president Tony King of Alcester who also supplied scorecards.

The new season gets under way during the week commencing Monday, April 18.
