Hunt on for top villages

THE search for Gloucestershire's village of the year has been launched, with a record prize pot of £6,000 up for grabs.

The Calor Village of the Year Competition, administered by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council, aims to identify communities that work hard for their residents, rather than judging villages on appearance.

This year the competition has eight categories - Building Community Life, Older People, Business, Young People, Environment, ICT and the new Healthy Village and Safer Community categories.

Stephen Wright, Director of GRCC added, "We are really excited to have the chance to expand the competition and the prize fund this year.

"However, the real emphasis of the competition is still very much on the villages and their communities. You don't have to be big, you don't have to be small, you have to be able to demonstrate that you care as a community."

Closing date for entries is Friday, May 13, with judging in June and July and the final award ceremony held in mid-July.
