A COLD and windy day saw just under 40 riders, about half from Evesham Wheelers, undertake the annual 50 miles in four hours challenge.
A slightly revised route took the riders out through Upton and Welland to turn at Staunton where a vicious headwind awaited for the run back to Evesham.
First back was Steve McGrath of Wheelers, commendably in two hours 38 minutes, riding a mountain bike with road tyres, closely followed a few seconds later by clubmates Martyn Cole and Mat Ulmer.
First ladies back were Anne Brazier and Carol Hall, riding together for a time of three hours 19 minutes while a few riders suffered into that headwind even longer by missing the left turn in Bredon and accumulating another few miles.
The 12 A and B riders on Sunday took the lanes through to Henley-in-Arden for coffee. The route taken was via Norton, Salford Priors, Dunnington, Broom, Wixford, Alcester passing the Roebuck Inn then on to Haselor, Aston Cantlow and on to a well-earned coffee stop.
Returning home was via the lanes to Spurnal, Great Alne back through Alcester and on to Evesham after covering 45 miles.
On Sunday, Wheelers will be organising their road race and volunteers are wanted. Contact Paul Stockdale on 01451 831027.
