The Hollow Crown - RST, Stratford

JEWELS of the acting world delighted theatregoers at the RSC when they gathered to perform The Hollow Crown.

It is not a play, it's an entertainment by and about the Kings and Queens of England, often penned by the monarchs themselves or interested observers. The material gleaned from old letters and chronicles, was put together in 1960 by John Barton for a Stratford poetry festival.

The Hollow Crown went on to win acclaim all over the world, played by notable cast members including Peggy Ashcroft, Derek Jacobi and Vanessa Redgrave.

The present revival, directed again by John Barton, is no less impressive with Sir Donald Sinden, Clive Francis, Harriett Walter, Alan Howard and Richard Johnson taking over the reins.

They combined to turn what could easily have been a static series of monologues and verse, into a delightful insight into the thoughts and fates of the mighty, exposing their frailties and cruelties with clever perception and welcomed wit.

Kings and Queens from William the Conqueror to Queen Victoria came alive, as did a very young Jane Austen who reveals her own charming yet provocative view on Mary Queen of Scots

Special mention must also go to the skilful troubadour, Stephen Gray whose delightful tales in music and song threaded their way seamlessly through the patchwork of historical events.

The Hollow Crown is on at the RSC in Stratford until March 19. For tickets contact the box office on 08706091110.
