CONSTRUCTION workers refurbishing the Co-op store in Chipping Campden High Street have unearthed a note buried in the window fittings more than 50 years ago.
The note includes a list of store staff from the time and is signed by a Mr Bill Pither, who fitted the windows in1954.
A call has gone out for anyone with information about the people named on the note to come forward.
Co-op spokesman Adrian Barradell said: "As part of the extensive refurbishment of the interior of the store we had to temporarily remove the front windows. When the windows were taken out our contractors came across a note, which was buried inside the window fitting. It is dated April 1954 and must have been put in there when the property was last upgraded".
The note also lists the costs of five key store products and the prices including smoked middle (bacon) at 3/6d (17 p) a pound, butter at 3/8d (18p) a pound, gran (possibly granary loaf) at 7 d (3p) a pound, lard at 1/8d (8p) and marg(erine) at 1/6d (7 p).
The Co-op is now hoping townspeople will help them find the store staff included on the list. "It's quite possible that some of the people on the list are still alive and living in the area, or that their children or relatives are in the area" said Mr Barradell. "If this is the case we would be delighted if they would get in touch with us as we would very much like to invite them to the store re-launch on Thursday, April 28."
The names are: John Shadbolt, Agnes Bruce, Freda Hopkins, Gwen Hands, Anne Merriman, Robert Sinnnott, Jean Parsons and C Haydon (manager).
Anyone with information about the note should call Adrian Barradell on 01865 256280.
