Record breaker steams in for heritage line's big day

THE locomotive believed to have been first to break the 100mph barrier in 1903 was the star of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway's spring steam gala.

The City of Truro made two non-stop trips between the heritage line's Toddington Station and Cheltenham Racecourse last weekend, sharing the 13 miles of track with four other steam engines.

Railway spokesman Ian Crowder said: "We were very lucky to have the City of Truro with us and it definitely attracted the crowds. It was only travelling at a quarter of its record-breaking speed, but it was fast enough for anyone to appreciate the grace and elegance of the Edwardian masterpiece."

Another of the engines plying the restored line between Friday and Sunday was the Cornishman, which used to transport families from the Midlands to Cornwall for holidays.
