Hansel and Gretel make festival debut

A NEW production of Humperdinck's masterpiece Hansel and Gretel will be revealed at the opera house at Longborough.

Longborough Festival Opera has been committed to producing its own work since 1998 and Hansel and Gretel has been prepared by LFO's artistic director Alan Privett to be performed on Friday, July 15 at 6.30pm.

"Sung in English, Hansel and Gretel has much to offer both children and adults. As a well-known fairy-tale, the opera makes for a delightful musical fantasy," said Charlotte Ooi.

"Even if the name Engelbert Humperdinck is not familiar to you, you will find that much of his music does strike a chord. The overture is particularly famous."

LFO's new Hansel and Gretel will be making good use of the newly extended orchestra pit, using an orchestra of some 42 players, It also featured 14 children all drawn from local schools, carefully coached and prepared by Maria Jagusz, who also takes the part of Hansel. The opera is conducted by Paul McGrath.

All operas this year have been produced specifically for and by the opera house at Longborough and cannot be seen anywhere else.
