Alcohol group aiming to curb teen binge-drinkers

A NEW campaign has been launched in Chipping Campden to crack on binge drinking.

St Saviour's Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre is promoting alcohol awareness week to highlight the problem of young people drinking alcohol in their early teens.

The awareness week, starting with an exhibition created by the pupils of Chipping Campden School, will run from Saturday until Saturday, July 23.

For the last 12 months St Saviour's has been actively involved in educating teenagers at Campden's secondary school about the importance of safe drinking.

St Saviour's clinical director Con Twomey said: "We've talked quite openly about the dangers of binge-drinking and how this can lead to significantly higher incidences of alcoholism in teenagers and serious mental illnesses later in life"

"Alcohol misuse is seriously interfering with community life, even in this peaceful part of the North Cotswolds. We want to encourage a swift change in attitude, engender a responsible approach to the consumption of alcohol, and that's the reason for Alcohol Awareness Week."

To find out how many units a day is a safe amount to drink, or to learn of the long-term damage binge-drinking brings, visit the Town Hall in Chipping Campden on Saturday and Sunday.
