Pilot recalls battle days

MEMORIES have come flooding back for Derek Tapson of Bredon after his exploits were recalled in a book about Second World War pilots.

Derek joined the RAF in December 1942 and flew Typhoons in the run up to D-Day.

He was shot down in February 1945.

Despite being a POW for three months and forced to march from Nuremberg to Munich he says he has many more happy memories than sad ones.

"I made a lot of good friends and we still keep in touch," he said.

Now his memories form part of Victory Fighters, a new book about the pilots involved in the air battle over Europe from 1941 to VE Day.

Steve Darlow, author of Victory Fighters, spent some time talking to Mr Tapson and borrowed photographs of his friends for the book.
