A sporting chance for keen young players

YOUNG sports fans across the Cotswolds will benefit from a free programme of events this summer holiday.

The activity programme, organised by Cotswold District Council, will include coaching in football, cricket, hockey, tennis and netball and basketball. Multi-sport coaching days will also be on offer to give children aged five to 15 an introduction to many different sports at a basic level.

The first multi-sports day will take place at Chipping Campden leisure centre next Tuesday.

The council's sports access officer, Scott Burry, said: "Since our launch in February, the scheme has been a great success with more than 500 children taking part. Our aim is to provide quality sports coaching to children in sports they may not have played before with the emphasis on fun and to encourage their involvement in local sports clubs.

"We've been given a great amount of support by local sports clubs, council members and town and parish councils."

All coaches working within the scheme are qualified sports coaches with current first aid qualifications and all have undergone a Criminal Records Bureau check.

Coaching is free but each child is asked to pay a one-off registration fee of £5, which allows them to attend as many sessions as they wish. Each day begins at 10am and finishes at 3pm and all equipment for each sport is provided. Children are asked to bring a packed lunch and drinks in plastic bottles only.
