Village is second for being healthy

MICKLETON has been named as runner-up in the Calor Gloucestershire Village of the year.

The pretty village was awarded second place in the new healthy village category of the competition which this year attracted interest from more than 40 parishes.

The section takes into account the various healthy-living facilities the village has to offer including play, sport and recreational.

Chairman of the judging panel Phil Randall said: "Mickleton has quite a few recreational activities going on.

"A group, the Mickleton Walkers, meets once a fortnight, they also have walking weekends and good junior sports facilities.

"In addition, the village has a thriving gardening club with more than 100 members, line-dancing and keep-fit classes and a food co-operative.

"They grow their own produce which is then taken to a village shop to be sold."

Gloucestershire Rural Community Council director Stephen Wright helped to organise the competition and was greatly impressed with this year's entries.

He said: "There is a real sense of community within our villages, a warm welcome for newcomers, a caring attitude toward the older person and a true spirit of investment in young people."
