Rangers reach quarter-finals

Moreton Rgrs U14 2, Langford 1

RANGERS progressed to the quarter-finals of the Witney and District Youth League's Knockout Cup last Sunday - but not without a struggle.

Throughout the first half, the hosts enjoyed a stranglehold on possession but chances were few and far between. And, the only effort of note was a 25-yard rasping drive from Josh Foster that rattled the crossbar.

Both defences were solid and, as the match moved into the second half, it was a struggle to see just where a goal would come from.

The breakthrough came when Sam Ellis was in the right place at the right time to bundle the ball into the net from a probing McPherson cross.

A second goal soon followed when Callum Millard lashed a shot from just wide of the 18-yard box into the top corner.

Surely, with two miserly defences, the game was over. Langford, though, weren't willing to accept that and, after pulling one back, made Moreton sweat before clinching a quarter-final spot.

In a display that was not Rangers' best, Eddie Dale stood out in midfield with Dan Sherry and Jack Bruce in imperious mood at the back.

THE scoreline might give the appearance of a dull encounter but the game produced some fine play from both sides.

It was end to end action in the first half when the visitors could have had a penalty when Matty Magee was bundled over in the box.

In the second half Moreton started to get to grips with their physical opponents as they played the better football.

However, the goal just wouldn't arrive and, even though Rangers finished the stronger, they had to settle for a well-deserved point.
