Police put Harleys to test

POLICE could soon be cruising around the rural areas of south Warwickshire, after the local force put Harley Davidson motorcycles to the test.

Warwickshire Police road policing unit is trying out the iconic motorcycle - forever linked in the popular imagination with the 60s cult classic Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper - to establish its suitability for operational policing.

The unit is one of two UK forces putting the motorcycle through its paces for a two-month period.

Officers have been using the Road King tourer since early December and will be reporting back on the trial later this month.

Chief Inspector Geoff Beston of Warwickshire Police road policing unit said the Harley Davidson had been a useful addition to the road policing fleet but that it had limitations for overall patrol duties.

"The Harley is very visually impactive but it's not as manoeuvrable for general patrol as the BMW and Honda models we use in our motorcycle fleet."
