Councillors back crossing demand

COUNCILLORS are backing calls for a new pedestrian crossing in Moreton following a near-fatal collision involving a five-year-old child earlier this month.

As reported exclusively in the Journal last week, mother-of-three Lucy Tweedie called for a crossing to be built on the busy A429 Fosseway after her daughter Lettice was almost knocked down by a car trying to cross the road to go to Dormer House School earlier this month.

Now Moreton Town Council clerk Heather Sipthorp has written to the school's head, Alison Thomas, expressing the council's support for a crossing near the school, which is in the area of Budgen's supermarket, the White House Surgery and the new play area in Queen Victoria Gardens.

Mrs Sipthorp told the Journal this week: "We're drawing the attention of the GCC to the fact that it was part of their medium term priorities. The play area is such a big success that it is going to add to the problem of the number of people crossing that road."

County council spokeswoman Laura Bowdler said: "The need for a crossing was identified during a transport study for Moreton-in-Marsh. The county council will be assessing this scheme against many others competing for resources. We recognise it as a priority for the residents of Moreton."
