COFFEE MORNING: A coffee morning with a bring and buy sale was held in The Joseph Webb Hall, Chapel Lane, and was well supported with monies raised being sent to support the Chapel Missionaries Fund.
THE MICKLETON SOCIETY held its AGM on April 4. Paul Johnson was elected chairman; Sandra Barlow, vice-chairman; Brian Crangle, secretary; Robert Brookes, treasurer. Committee members are Sheila Hilton (programme), Martin Brodrick, Jo Parr and Janet Walmesley.
The chairman reported another successful year. Membership is up almost 20 per cent; there had been a successful programme with six interesting talks, the visit to Alscot Park, garden party and the Christmas supper.
He thanked the committee for all their work and support and the members for supporting the programme. Tickets for this year's garden party on June 23 are on sale. With the majority sold/reserved at the AGM, he advised early booking.
Robert Brookes reported another satisfactory year with the society continuing to make a small profit.
Following the meeting, Mr Pat Furley presented a history of the Magic Lantern. Originating in the 17th Century, it has been powered by candles, paraffin, carbide, gas limelight and, eventually, gas. Originally the apparatus was hidden behind a curtain - hence its name. Pat has many hundreds of slides, many originals going back to the 1800s. He showed a selection of these, ranging from scenery views, humorous, comic slides and moving pictures. Pat also had several examples of magic lanterns, from very early, quite primitive versions, to more modern ones. The secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
