MICKLETON'S villagers rose to the challenge presented by the cold start to the year to produce a riot of spring flowers for the gardening club's spring show.
The later showing of spring flowers was balanced by the display of daffodils now at their very best, said show secretary Thelma Hunt.
"It was a fantastic sight," said Mrs Hunt. "The event was lovely, and I would like to congratulate all the winners and everyone who took part in this shared moment celebrating spring."
Entries for the show were up by 43 on last year, giving plenty of competition in the 26 classes for varieties and arrangements.
Judging was carried out by Mrs Boughton and Mr Lloyd.
Class winners were Peggy Atherton, Wally Brain, Alan Kitchen, and Gay Rochfort. The overall points winner was Ann Wall, with Mervyn Davies second and Jo Jones in third place.
Children from Mickleton staged an art competition and exhibition for the show, with paintings of flowerheads inspired by photographs taken during a summer art week last year. The winners were Katherine Wain, Ben Smith, Georgina Groves, and Esme Baldwyn.
The competition was judged by local artist Peggy Atherton.
