Start in winning fashion

BROADWAY Bowls Club opened its green last Saturday to get the 2006 season under way with the traditional Captain against Vice-Captain's Challenge.

With the green looking well despite the cool recent conditions there was an excellent turnout of members to welcome in the new season.

The first competitive game was played the next afternoon against Whaddon from Cheltenham and the hosts got off to a flier winning 131-66 when gaining wins on all five rinks.

Chairman Steve Aldren skipped the highest winning rink, closely followed by Brian Clarke and Colin Cooper. There were also wins for captain Mick Aubrey and Richard Hall.

Rink scores: R Bryant, T Morley, D Dennis, R Hall 23-18; P Groom, R Turner, H Keyte, M Aubrey 20-19; P Smith, J Chapman, D Turner, C Cooper 28-10; T Hopkins, M Barnes, N Appleby, B Clarke 29-10; J Davies, B Sturgess, R J Oliver, S Aldren 31-9.
