Speake and Rainbow add colour to a successful start

BROADWAY made a winning start in two national competitions when defeating Oldington in the Two-Rink competition and Barbourne in the EBA Top Club competition.

Oldington - an amalgamation of the old Chainwire and Brin-tons clubs in Kidderminster - were last Friday's visitors.

Paul Speake's rink was always in control and won comfortably, while Mark Rainbow's rink came out winners after a tighter game

Rink scores: M Aubrey, C Cooper, R Hall, P Speake won 29-16; S Aldren, D Hall, A Walters, M Rainbow won 21-14.

On Sunday morning Broadway ran out easy winners against Barbourne who failed to win a game.

Phil Taylor set the ball rolling in the Two-Wood singles with a 16-7 victory after 17 ends. Andrew Walters was next off the green having outplayed his opponent when recording a 21-4 success.

Victory was assured when Rainbow triumphed 17-9 in the Triples and the pairs of Richard and Dennis Hall were eight shots up on the 20th end when the Fours, skipped by Speake, were also well ahead by 17-11.

Scores - Two-Wood Singles: P Taylor 16-7. Four-Wood: A Walters 21-4. Pairs: D & R Hall 22-14. Triples: S Aldren, B Clarke, M Rainbow 17-9. Fours: M Aub-rey, D Cresswell, C Cooper, P Speake 17-11.

In between the two national competitions, Broadway hosted Bredon for a Concorde League fixture.

In what is always a competitive fixture, scores were virtually even on four of the five rinks after 15 ends but a strong finish from the home side saw them win all five to record a 125-83 margin of victory.

There was more success for the club when Norgren and Northwick were both defeated in friendly contests.

There were comprehensive wins for Dave Dennis and John Oliver who both won by 20 shots or more at Norgren, while Colin Cooper also won well.

In a three-rink mixed game against Blockley-based North-wick, Broadway won on two of the rinks to run out winners 65-47.
