Keep it clean, fans are told

FOOTBALL fans were this week urged by police to enjoy the World Cup without scoring any own goals.

A concerted campaign aimed at preventing drink-fuelled violence has been launched to ensure the area remains trouble-free throughout the tournament.

Pubs throughout the Vale have been contacted and warned not to serve anyone who appears to be under the influence of drink.

And extra police will be on patrol in Evesham and other town centres at key times.

Inspector Steve Brooker of South Worcestershire police said: "Many people will be visiting their local pub to watch the games but obviously those where England are playing will attract more fans and if the weather is fine in can get even busier.

"We will have more officers in the town centres during key times in the tournament providing high-visibility and a reassuring presence on the streets.

"We will also be using the mobile CCTV units in key locations and working with CCTV centres across the force area.

"Many pubs will also have extended opening hours and in the past few weeks we have been working closely with licensees to ensure that there is a good flow of information between us.

"We have also been reminding them about their responsibilities when it comes to serving people who are showing signs of drunkenness, and not to promote binge drinking and ensure that they stay within the terms of their licence.

"We will be concentrating our efforts on the irresponsible few who drink too much and cause problems for themselves and others and also the hard core of motorists who refuse to accept that drinking and driving does kill."

He added: "The message we want people to remember is to enjoy themselves but at the same time make sure that they are considerate to others. Violence and criminal behaviour of any sort will not be tolerated."
