REBECCA Quiney, aged 13 from Strings Squash and Fitness Centre, enjoyed a great start to the season by winning the Wycliffe Junior Open Under-15 Girls title.
The event was a bronze-rated England Squash sanctioned event where all players earn national ranking points. Rebecca, pic-tured, is currently ranked 15 in the cou-ntry and hopes this win will boost that ranking.
Coach Wendy Mait-land said: "All members of Strings Academy have worked extremely hard during the off season months of the summer.
"This has been a great start to the season for Rebecca and her success has been encouraging for the whole squad".
The winner was one of a squad of players from the Ashchurch Road in action at the event.
Sam Davidson and Rory Birtwhistle both lost in the quarter-finals of the Under-15 Boys category, Chris Quiney was runner-up in the Under-19 Plate while George Neville reached the Under-15 Plate semi-final.
“To reach two finals was better than I could have hoped for,” said Maitland. “And, I might be persuaded to play again in the County Closed Doubles in December.”

The Strings duo started strongly win-ning the first two games but, after two hours on court, the match was all-square at 2-2 and 14-all only for the No 1 seeds to win another long rally and with it the match It was straight back on court for the Mixed Final against top seeded Pierrepont and Tim Vail who proved too strong and won 3-1 des-pite losing the opening game.
"To reach two finals was better than I could have hoped for," said Maitland. "And, I might be persuaded to play again in the County Closed Doubles in December."
