County Cup progress

Westbury Utd Res 2, Tewkesbury Tn 5 TOWN'S solitary defeat last season was in the County Cup and that has made the competition more important this time around.

Town faced a side they knew little about last weekend when Joe Goodwin replaced regular goalkeeper Matt Burton between the sticks.

Ben Jackson caused the home defence a lot of problems, firstly by hitting the bar and then by latching on to a clever Dave Goodwin through ball to expertly tuck the ball into the bottom corner.

George Kirby ran the opposition ragged down the left and could have had scored five or six if he had worn his shooting boots. Paul Kavanagh and Jason Game came close before Stewart Merry grabbed the second.

Paul Kavanagh made it 3-0 just before the break but Westbury pulled one back before Stuart McCash restored the three-goal advantage with an unstoppable penalty after Jackson was upended.

Westbury grabbed another goal back as Town slowed before an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area by Ollie Kavanagh completed the scoring.

Town travel to Tivoli Rovers in the Cheltenham League on Saturday.

The Sunday side went down 3-1 at home to section leaders Moreton Town who led 2-0 at half-time.

And, when the visitors evaded Town's offside trap, the points were wrapped up leaving the hosts with the sole consolation of a late goal from James Heath.

Tewkesbury will be looking for an improved display at home to Alderton this weekend.
