Successes at squash tournament

STRINGS Squash and Fitness in Tewkesbury was the venue for the annual Strings Junior Open.

The tournament attracted a record entry of 106 children from throughout England and Wales and was given the status of an England Squash Bronze event, which allows players to earn ranking points to improve their national rankings.

Gloucestershire success started with young Edd Evans from Strings losing 9-1, 9-7, 9-0 in the Under-11 competition to Oxfordshire's Richard Hopkins.

Strings teammate Rebecca Quiney continued her recent run of success by capturing the Under-15 title with a 9-2, 9-2, 9-5 win over Catherine Finalyson from Winchester.

There were more successes in Under-17 competition when Julianne Courtice collected the title from Kerrie Sample (Bucks) 9-3, 10-8, 9-3.

The boys final was an all Gloucestershire affair between Josh Saysell and Theo Anderson from Wycliffe with the former winning Saysell winning 9-5, 9-3, 9-6.

Luke Smolinski, also from Wycliffe, enjoyed the tournament of his life recovering from a year of injuries to finish second in the Under-19 boys after losing to Jake Grayston 10-8, 9-7, 9-2.
