  • Bourton Vale

    HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Members produced many lovely vases of garden flowers for the monthly competition which was won by Eunice Russell. More than 50 members came expecting to hear Dr Wilson from Cogges Farm Museum showing Historic Gardening Tools but he was unable to attend after a car accident. Members will, however, be going to Cogges Manor Farm Museum on June 21, 6.15pm at the War Memorial, transport being provided by members for those in need, the cost is £4 per head and a dozen places are left. The July outing is to Hampton Court Palace with transport provided by Pulhams Coaches at £16 per head on July 12, with a 9am start. Peter Sheasby of Bloxham agreed to come to the May meeting in place of Dr Wilson, and entertained with slides of wild flowers in Eastern Turkey. The vote of thanks was given by Ray Fardon. read more

He showed a collection of slides of many of the Cotswolds' buildings, both the well-known ones and those tucked away in tiny hamlets. read more

    ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: The annual parish meeting, chaired by Cllr Tony Wilkins, was attended by all parish councillors, district cllr C J Saint and 27 parishioners. read more

    GARDENING CLUB: There was a good attendance at the May meeting. Before the start of proceedings members booked their places for the three outings to local gardens this coming summer. The chairman then introduced the speaker for the evening. Mrs Sue Burn gave an illustrated talk on Batsford Arboretum. She started with a brief history of the house and garden as it was in the early 1800s then followed by showing slides of a year in the Arboretum as it is today. Much of the planting is influenced by trees from China and Japan. The chairman thanked the speaker. read more

    ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN'S SECTION: At the May meeting, chairman Wendy Griffiths read the delegate's report to members of the National Conference at Blackpool. Details were given of a proposed trip on August 22 to Crossfield House, Rhayader (a Royal British Legion home), also notice of 60th anniversary lunch at The Angel Hotel, on November 16, supported by the Co-operative Community Fund. Speaker for the evening was Ralph Mason on the Talking Newspaper. Next committee meeting will be held on Monday (one week early at Pershore WMC) as the branch will be holding a tombola at Pershore Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday, May 29. read more
