Weekend of woe for Broadway bowlers

BROADWAY went down to a surprise defeat at home to Overbury in a Concorde League game on Saturday and then exited the Vernon Turner Cup at Chester Road the next morning to complete a disappointing weekend.

After five ends Broadway had established a commanding lead of 22 shots but Overbury were not fazed and Carr and Norman pulled their rinks back into the game to reduce the deficit to 14 after ten ends.

Five ends later and Overbury were only six shots adrift and a strong finish saw them take the lead in the last couple of ends and win 96-88.

Sunday morning's weather seemed to be against bowling in Kidderminster but a break in the rain allowed the game to go ahead after a delay of 15 minutes.

Colin Cooper was in trouble early on but fought back to within four shots at one point before falling away again.

However, the other three rinks also struggled and, by the time the rain reappeared towards the end of the game, the visitors were well beaten with all four rinks defeated.

Later in the day, Broadway entertained the Leicester Sunday Tourists in what is always an enjoyable afternoon.

Broadway proved too strong for the touring side winning on four of the seven rinks, drawing on two and only losing one.

Andrew Walters' rink was on top form as they picked up a maximum eight shots on the 15th end in a comfortable 33-10 success.

Steve Aldren didn't have much to do as his front end made life easy for him and Sue Warren and they were always in command winning 25-14.

Joan Parfitt was never headed as she pulled away strongly in the closing stages to win 25-17, while Cooper also won well 18-12.

John Oliver and Dave Bartlett's rink realised it was only a friendly and both played out a 19-19 draw while Trish Emms came back well at the end only to lose 26-11.
