THE sun shone on Broadway Bowls Club for its annual '81 Trophy tournament played on Sunday when the 96 bowlers and spectators enjoyed a superb day's action.
Greenkeeper Jeff Dennis once again presented a green in immaculate condition as the competition got under way at 9am.
Andrew Walters' rink set the early pace in Group A recording two comfortable wins in their first two games.
Mick Hawkins from Welford, meanwhile, was the pacemaker in Group B with Moz Pullen, skipping Bredon's Best, in hot pursuit in Group A while Gazza's Gang, skipped by Bob Jones from Barbourne, were also undefeated after two games in Group B.
Walters' rink of Charlie Gore, Steve Aldren and Brian Ford recorded two more comfortable wins to top their group and qualify for the final.
Bredon's Best retained second place and went into the third place play-off.
After the third round in Group B, Hawkins was in pole position - a point ahead of Gazza's Gang and only needing a win against the Nutcases to reach the final.
However, the Nutcases, skip-ped by Broadway's Viv Hall, had other ideas and ran out 10-8 winners leaving the way open for Gazza's Gang to reach the final which they did with a comprehensive win in the last game.
Walters' rink was always in command in the final as they picked up a four on the fourth end to establish a 7-1 lead and another four on the sixth for an 11-3 lead as they ran out easy 14-4 winners to take the top prize.
The play-off for third was a much closer affair eventually won by Bredon's Best 10-9.
Prizes were presented by club president, Mick Aubrey, who thanked all the sponsors for their generosity.
The sponsors were Karndean International Ltd, GSL, BUPA Care Homes, Avonmore Associates, Pershore Bowls Centre, D Cresswell Enterprises, Cotswold Mowers, Waverleys and Budgens.
