Historic hotel is sold to pub chain

An historic hotel in Tewkesbury has been sold to the national pub company JD Wetherspoon.

The Royal Hop Pole Hotel, where Charles Dicken's Mr Pickwick famously stopped to dine, was on the market for £1.175 million.

National hotel agents Colliers Robert Barry confirmed that they have sold the three star listed building, parts of which date from the 15th century.

JD Wetherspoon has also bought additional land at the back of the hotel and is consulting with English Heritage and the local planning department before carrying out major refurbishment.

An application to convert it from a hotel to a pub, wine bar and hotel has been submitted to the borough council and should be considered within the next eight weeks.

The building is currently empty and boarded up.
