Comment from Graham Scaife on the Malvern Gazette Facebook page here:
OMG! What is wrong with people these days? We have a bit of wind and rain and the schools close early! We had severe weather back in the seventies when I was at school and I don't recall EVER being sent home early because it was wet and windy. We are raising a generation of wimps. Imagine them at work in years to come, they'll be up and heading home as soon as a few drops appear on the window!

A decision to allow a ship to set sail across the English Channel in high winds with hundreds of live sheep on board was condemned as "barbaric" by the RSPCA.
The vessel, MV Joline, set off from the Port of Ramsgate in Kent laden with two lorry loads of sheep, but it had to abort its crossing and turn back to the UK due to the weather.

National update: The Met Office has said some areas could see up to 60mm (5ins) of rain falling on already saturated ground, which could lead to further river and surface water flooding.
Much of the UK is also facing winds of up to 50-60mph, and even gusts of up to 70mph in exposed western areas, which could worsen surface water flooding as drains are blocked by wind-blown leaves and debris.
There are currently 76 flood warnings for rivers and more than 150 less serious flood alerts in place across England and Wales, with the majority of areas at risk in south west England and the Midlands.
The Environment Agency urged people in affected areas, including Devon, Dorset, Bristol, Torbay, Plymouth, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, to keep up to date with the latest warnings.
2:34pm
The Safer Roads Partnership and West Mercia Police are advising motorists that if driving through larger puddles or smaller areas of standing water drive slowly and steadily, allow oncoming traffic to pass and always test your brakes after leaving the water.
If water has flooded across a section of road it may be difficult to tell exactly how deep it is.
If you do come across a road that is flooded DO NOT attempt to drive through the flood water.
There have already been reports locally of motorists ignoring road closures that are in place - this not only has the potential to put yourself in danger and other people; it could also damage your vehicle; as little as an egg cup of water entering your engine is enough to wreck it.
