Worcestershire hit with snow blizzards

WORCESTERSHIRE woke up to a blanket of snow this morning with more expected to fall throughout the day.

Many schools across the county are closed as heavy snow is forecast for later on with six inches expected to fall in places.

The Met office has issued an amber alert for the midlands, which means people need to be prepared for the weather and take steps to protect themselves from the impacts of severe weather.

Heavy snow is predicted to fall during morning rush hour and continue until this afternoon where it will ease off a bit.

Temperatures will not get above freezing today with predictions of -2C.

With conditions due to get worse this morning, Anna Higgins, communications manager for the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “In extreme weather conditions, such as thick snow, motorists should avoid any non-essential travel.

“If you do need to travel, take extra care on the roads and ensure your vehicle is in good running order before you leave.

“Vehicle handling can change considerably and it takes much longer to slow down on icy and slippery roads.

“With the current forecast, there is the potential for some severe travel disruption and the public are advised to watch or listen to local news for updates and be prepared to alter their travel plans.”
