Tewkesbury school sixth former Ed Burrows has been selected to take part in a once in lifetime trip to the Arctic.
The 17-year-old is one of 60 young adventurers who will spend six weeks living under canvas on Disko Island, a spectacular remote place, 800 miles within the Arctic Circle.
They will undergo survival training, before taking part in scientific research on a glacier. There will also be a chance to take part in mountain climbing.
Ed, who is studying A-Level geography, has always enjoyed outdoor activities and says a trip like this is something he has always wanted to do.
The keen skier is now building up his fitness and doing lots of climbing in preparation for the trip, which starts next June.
The temperature at base camp will be like an English winter, but once they get into the mountains it will fall below freezing and there will be strong wind chill factor.
Ed was selected for the trip following a rigorous interview process and now has to raise £3,000 towards the costs.
The school is offering him some sponsorship towards the costs, and he is also planning a number of fundraising events.
