The toilets in Saffron Road could be sold off, to fund the town council taking over the Gander Lane facilities.
As part of its cost cutting exercise the borough council has offered to refurbish the Gander Lane toilets if the town council will agree to take over their maintenance.
If they decline the toilets, in the Abbey Lawns Car Park will be closed next April The Saffron Road toilets cost around £11,000 a year to run and are looked after by a part time cleaner.
The Gander Lane toilets cost just under £8,000 and are looked after by contract cleaners.
Town Councillors agreed that they could not afford to run both, but the ones in Gander Lane are better positioned and monitored by CCTV cameras.
As a result they have had the Saffron Road site valued for possible development and discovered that it is worth between £30,000 and £40,000.
A decision on whether to sell them, use the money to install a disabled facility in the Watson Hall, and take responsibility for Gander Lane has been referred to the General Purposes and Finance Committee.
