Loos could go in cost-cutting

The toilets in Tewkesbury's Saffron Road could be sold off to fund the town council taking over the Gander Lane facilities.

As part of its cost-cutting exercise, the borough council has offered to refurbish the Gander Lane toilets, if the town council will agree to take over their maintenance.

The Saffron Road toilets cost around £11,000 a year to run and are looked after by a part-time cleaner.

The Gander Lane toilets cost just under £8,000 and are looked after by contract cleaners.

Town councillors agreed they could not afford to run both, but Gander Lane's are better positioned and monitored by CCTV cameras. As a result, they have had the Saffron Road site valued for development and found it's worth between £30,000 and £40,000.

A decision on whether to sell them, use the money to install a disabled facility in the Watson Hall and take responsibility for Gander Lane has been referred to the general purposes and finance committee.
