PLANS for a mobile phone mast in Bishop's Cleeve have been turned down by a planning inspector.
Phone giants O2 (UK) Ltd appealed against Tewkesbury Borough Council's decision not to approve a development order, which would have allowed the company to install a 15 metre high mast and two equipment cabins alongside the A435, near its junction with Voxwell Lane.
Inspector Kevin Nield agreed that a mast was needed in that vicinity to allow for mobile phone cover in the area, but the chosen site would have too great an impact on the street scene.
It would be 6 metres higher than nearby street lights and 7 m higher than the tallest trees, having a significantly harmful effect on the character and appearance of the area.
He suggested that a free standing mast might be sited in the grounds of The Grange, a large office complex to the south of the appeal site.
