Water firm looking to future with 25-year plan

SEVERN Trent Water has published a 25-year plan this week detailing how the company can make sure customers receive a const-ant supply of clean water over the next 25 years.

The Water Resources Plan sets out the company's intentions for maintaining the balance between supply and demand for water across the Severn Trent region, while ensuring customers' bills are kept down.

Minimising the impact on the environment and securing sustainable use of water resources also features in the draft plan, which was published on Tuesday.

Andy Smith, water services director for Severn Trent, said: "The pattern of more households using more water and the predicted effect of climate change means we probably will not have enough water available to meet everyone's needs in 25 years' time.

"We need to act now to secure supplies and manage demand so that customers do not face restrictions in the future."

Severn Trent has put together a number of tips on how to be more efficient in the way people use water in light of this.

These include getting leaky taps repaired, taking shorter showers and using a bucket and sponge to wash cars instead of hosepipes.

Mr Smith added: "We know we have lots of work to do as a company but equally we all need to take steps to make sure we are not unnecessarily wasting water."

The plan is open to a 12-week consultation, until July 29, giving customers and local organisations the opp-ortunity to help shape its development.
