GROWING some of the food used in the school kitchen is one of the activities which helped Tirlebrook Primary School gain national healthy school status.
Headteacher Pete Goodger said working towards the accolade has meant the whole school ethos is geared towards a healthy lifestyle.
"We have run our own kitchens since 1994 and have always provided healthy meals and encouraged the youngsters to only bring in fruit and vegetables for a mid morning snack," he said.
Mr Goodger said they had bought new equipment to encourage active play and built raised soil beds so pupils can grow fruit and vegetables, which then go into the kitchen.
"Most of the tomatoes and courgettes they have eaten over the past few weeks have come from their own gardens," he said.
He is delighted with the award, which was presented by the county council last week.
l Tucking into their healthy dinners at Tirlebrook school are Emma Christopher, Daniel Bourton, Owen Mills and Nadia Moysey. oct06022.
