Famous Mop Fair returning to Tewkesbury
1:08pm Saturday 15th September 2012 in News
TEWKESBURY’S famous Mop Fair makes a welcome return to the town next month.
The largest street fair in Gloucestershire will include fairground rides, traditional games, sideshows and stalls in the town centre on Tuesday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 10.
The event - which dates back to the 12th Century - is free and starts at 6pm.
According to the Tewkesbury Fair Society, the name came about as farm hands, labourers, servants and craftsmen looking for work, would take along a piece of equipment to represent their trade to the annual fair.
When workers had no specific skills they would carry a mop head instead signifying that they were for free for work in the hope of a prospective employer spotting them in the crowds.
